London: what to know before you go
- Before departure
- Check what your passport requires: many visitors who are visa free must now get an electronic travel authorisation online first. Apply only through the official government site.
- Airport links
- From Heathrow (LHR) you can take the Elizabeth line or the Piccadilly line, and the other airports run their own trains. Have a map and the transit app ready when you land.
- On the move
- You can tap a contactless card or your phone on transport. Coverage on the Underground is expanding but has gaps, so look up your route before heading below ground.
- Roaming since Brexit
- Each operator now makes its own rules for the UK, which is outside the EU roaming area. Plenty of EU plans charge extra there.
How much data you need
Four days of maps, tickets and photos tends to use 2 to 3 GB.

Questions about London
- Can I use my EU roaming in London?
- It is no longer guaranteed. Since Brexit the decision sits with each operator, and many charge for it. Check your plan before leaving, or go with a prepaid eSIM.
- What is the cheapest London eSIM plan?
- London uses the United Kingdom plans, because an eSIM belongs to a country and not to a city. $3.49 gets you 3 GB for 30 days. Data sizes range from 3 GB to 50 GB across 9 plans, and there are unlimited day passes too.
- Is the UK covered by EU roaming?
- No, not since 1 January 2021, when the UK left the EU roaming rules. An EU carrier may now charge for data there: a few plans still include the UK, while others bill per day or per megabyte. Look up your own plan before the trip.
- Which mobile networks does the London eSIM connect to?
- You get EE and 3, on 5G wherever it is available. The operators are listed on every plan, so you can check before you buy.
- Is there an unlimited data plan for United Kingdom?
- Yes, the day passes. Each day starts with a full speed allowance, and after it you stay online at a reduced speed of 500 Kbps.
- Will my phone number still work?
- Yes. Every plan is data only, so your regular line stays active for calls and texts, and WhatsApp carries on as usual.
- Should I buy a local SIM card in London?
- There is no need. An eSIM is a digital SIM card that you install from a QR code before the trip, so you skip the airport kiosk and never open the SIM tray.
- How does it compare with roaming in London?
- The eSIM is prepaid, so you know the full cost before you go and no charges appear later. Roaming is billed afterwards by your own carrier at its own rates, usually per day or per megabyte. Leave data roaming off on your regular line so it cannot bill you.
- When is the best time to install the eSIM?
- At home, on Wi-Fi, before you leave. Once you arrive, pick the Fizztrip line for mobile data and switch data roaming on for that line.
- When does the plan start counting days?
- At the first connection at your destination. Buying the eSIM or installing it does not start the clock, so a 30 day plan runs for 30 days from the moment it first joins a network there.
- Can I buy the eSIM weeks before my trip?
- Yes. Validity only starts at the first connection at your destination, so buying or installing early does not use up any days. Install it before the "Install by" date on your order.
- Is there a deadline to install the eSIM?
- Yes. Your order and the site show an "Install by" date, and an eSIM that is still not installed after that date expires. Buying early is fine: just install it on Wi-Fi before then.
- What happens when my data runs out?
- The connection pauses and nothing extra is charged, since every plan is prepaid. Top up from the eSIM page and you are back online on the same eSIM, with nothing to reinstall. On a day pass you get a full speed allowance each day. Once it is used, you stay connected at a lower speed (500 Kbps) until the next day begins.
- Can I add data later?
- Yes, straight from the eSIM page. The extra data goes onto the eSIM you already have, so there is nothing new to install.
- Can I share data with a hotspot?
- Yes. Hotspot traffic uses the same plan data and Fizztrip adds no fee for it. Keep in mind that a laptop burns through data much faster than a phone, so for remote work a day pass or a larger plan is the safer pick.
